Providing quality music therapy for veterans
Music Therapy For Vets, Inc.
Music Therapy for Vets is committed to providing quality music therapy services for Veterans to aid in the transition back to civilian life. The American Music Therapy Association defines music therapy as an established health profession that uses music and the therapeutic relationship to address physical, psychological, cognitive and/or social functioning for individuals of all ages and backgrounds.
Although it is often seen as an alternative therapy, music therapy has been practiced for over 70 years in hospitals, schools, prisons and in private practice. The effectiveness of music therapy among service members has been documented since the first music therapy programs were introduced in the 1940's. (U.S. War Department, Technical Bulletin 187, 1945, pp. 2 -3)
Music therapy allows individuals to work through difficult emotions in a safe environment. Musical improvisations allow Veterans to express intense emotions, which may be difficult to verbalize. Songwriting can allow a level of self-expression that can lead to catharsis and decrease symptoms of PTSD and depression. Music therapy groups can promote unity and facilitate the transition back to civilian life. The music created by Veterans can help civilians gain insight into the extent of sacrifice made by Veterans and their families.
